Kuwait - 400 kV OHTL Sahayah Solar Power Plant receives bids

Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is inviting proposals from bidders for the 400 kV Overhead Transmission Line (OHTL) project for the Al Shaqayya Solar Power Plant.

The project aims to connect the Al Shaqayya Solar Power Plant to the main substation in Al Wafra (Z) by installing a 400 kV OHTL.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) submitted the lowest bid. The bidders submitted a price of KWD 41.45 million (USD 135.2 million).

The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) has developed the innovative Shaqayya Renewable Energy Project, the first phase (Phase I) of an ambitious master plan to generate approximately 3.2GW of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Phase I lays the foundation for future renewable energy developments in Kuwait with the installation of a 50 megawatt (MW) concentrated solar power (CSP) plant, which was commissioned in December 2018, a 10 MW wind farm, which was commissioned in May 2017, and a 10 MW photovoltaic (PV) plant. The official inauguration of the Shakaya Renewable Energy Park was held in February 2019.

The Shakaya 50MW CSP project is the first commercial CSP plant in Kuwait. Developed by KISR, the project was awarded an EPC contract in 2015 to a consortium consisting of Spanish company TSK and Kuwait’s Karafi National. The Shakaya CSP plant will generate 180GWh per year on a total area of 250 hectares and will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 81,000 tons per year.
